"I need help setting boundaries!"

âś… FREE Webinar Event: Setting Boundaries in the Addictive Family System

Who this is for:

Families – Struggling with boundaries? This will give you clarity, tools, and peace of mind.
Providers – See how practical, engaging family education can transform your outcomes.

When addiction occurs in a family, the entire system is impacted—often in ways we don’t even realize. Without meaning to, patterns develop that actually prolong the problem instead of leading to real change.

Maybe you’ve felt it firsthand:
❌ You try to help, but it backfires.
❌ You set a boundary, but it doesn’t stick.
❌ You don’t know what’s “helping” vs. what’s “enabling.”

You’re not alone. Boundaries are one of the biggest struggles families face when dealing with a loved one’s addiction.

đź’ˇ SNEAK PEEK: The Paradox Of Intervention And Control

(One shift that changes everything for families!)

Helping—or just being controlling?

That's an important question families are presented with when learning how to support a loved one who is being treated for a substance use issue.

Something I came up with when I created my RehabWorks Family Education Program is called The Paradox Of Intervention And Control. It's a surprisingly simple way to help families see:

  1. What's within their control
  2. What's not within their control
  3. What they can do—that's within their control—help their loved one move towards successful recovery

For example, if the client is an adult, the family can't force them into recovery. They have no control over that.

What they do have control over is what they do for their own recovery.

The paradox here is that the family doing what they need to do for their own recovery—ends up being the best thing they can be doing to help their loved one move towards the desired goal of successful recovery.

This simple tool can be a game-changer in helping families shift their focus—from trying to control their loved one’s recovery to taking meaningful action within their own control. And that shift makes all the difference.

By understanding the Paradox of Intervention & Control, families can stop repeating the same frustrating patterns and instead set boundaries that actually work—restoring balance, reducing stress, and truly supporting their loved one’s recovery.
