Drinking Problem? Or Thinking Problem?

What does Bill Wilson have in common with a Toltec Warrior?

This week in my Wednesday Woo! series my I gave a presentation titled "Managing Your Spiritual Energy: A Warrior's Approach To Personal Efficiency."

During the second half of the talk we took a look at what the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous has to say about managing our energy and the impact this can have on recovery. In short, we were able to see that 12-Step recovery addresses a "thinking problem" as much as a drinking problem.

But I opened the presentation with a discussion about The Four Agreements, which is a book based on ancient Toltec teachings. And I had a little fun drawing some comparisons between the AA view on energy and the Toltec Warrior's approach to managing personal energy—leaving one to wonder, "Was Bill Wilson perhaps a Toltec?"

This video provides some interesting thoughts on the impact our thinking can have on our personal efficiency, as well as insight into just how effective 12-Step recovery can be as far as a personal growth program. The interesting comparison of the Toltec approach with the Big Book's discussion on energy clearly reveals what the alcoholics mean when they say, "It's not a drinking problem, it's a thinking problem!"
