There's a Russian fairytale called "The Firebird," in which a hunter is faced with a decision to pick up a feather he finds laying on the path in front of him. His horse warns him that picking up the feather could bring trouble. I won't tell you the rest of the story (although I bet you can guess).
I've been using this story for many years in my work with addiction clients. Picking up the feather for recovery can be scary. And just as you might have guessed, when the hunter picks up the feather, he indeed faces some challenges as a result of doing so.
But as is with the nature of Hero stories, you can also probably guess that things turn out pretty well for the hunter in the end.
For my Wednesday Woo! talk this week I put on my storytelling hat and rolled out "The Firebird," along with a discussion on the challenges that come with picking up the feather and following your heart's calling.
Whether you're making a decision about recovery, or about pursuing your life's dream in any other area, this is a fascinating presentation that goes pretty deep on psychological development and becoming the person you are meant to be.
