Recovery? Or Switching Addictions?

“As long as you didn't take a drink!”

In the strictest sense of the the word, sobriety refers to abstinence from alcohol or drugs.

But the term “recovery” is a more subjective term, which requires you to be honest with yourself: How’s the QUALITY of your recovery?:

• Burying yourself in gambling debt?

• “Eating your feelings” and ultimately harming your health due to an unhealthy relationship with food?

• Losing your family because of sexual acting out?

The question you have to ask yourself is: If you engage in any of this type of behavior—but don’t take a drink or drug—is that really being in recovery?

There is a difference between being “dry,” or switching addictions, and experiencing fulfilling and meaningful recovery.

One of the first things to look at is whether you're going outside of yourself to get your good feelings or if you're getting your good feelings from within. Relying on sex, food, shopping, gambling—even religion—to change how we feel would be examples of looking outside of ourselves for something that's supposed to come from within. And that negates any connection with our authentic self, which is the foundation of achieving true personal fulfillment—and as some might define it: recovery.
